Scorching the Garden 2020 Part 8
This is the third documented grow for us and we are introducing a lot of new things this year. We have more hardware, better software, and the same growing plan that has worked for many years. In just a few weeks, we’ll be in our next stage, but first, there are a few things that need to be done.
In the nursery, its a sea of green. The Mexican Serranos are the tallest of the bunch. The Bhut Jolokia are Trinidad Scorpions are thick with foliage and flowers. There are still threats of frost in the coming week, so we won’t be hardening off anything yet. The purple is just the lights, the leaves are quite green.
With June approaching, we don’t have any time to waste. We dug out the supplies from last year and loaded up the wagon. Thirty pounds of posts, a couple hundred feet of extruded vinyl, and a bit of PVC and rebar later, we had what we needed to partition our space.
The fencing went up super fast this year. The plot that got the horse bedding treatment had a few weeds that broke through. The surface is surprisingly flat and kinda crusty. Scraping away the rind-like few inches reveals evidence of worms: dark, dark, moist soil.
The plot that didn’t get the manure treatment had about the same amount of weeds that grew over the winter. It will be interesting to see if there is a difference between the yields of the two plots.
After the posts, we put down the cardboard we had been collecting since January. We made sure to put some under the fencing. Last year, there were a few places along the fence where weeds got annoying.
32 cans of mulch later, and we were almost done. Thing is, we ran out or cardboard. Yea. Not sure how that happened. We should be able to grab enough sheets to cover the rest of the plot by the time we are ready to plant. At least, the first plot.
