Scorching the Garden 2020 Part 6

This is the third documented grow for us and we are introducing a lot of new things this year.  We have more hardware, better software, and the same growing plan that has worked for many years.  Spring is officially here, and we’re chomping at the bit to get our hands dirty outside.

We went outside to one of our experimental gardens and found the kale was as excited about spring as we are.  The amazing shades of green these winter tested plants display is spectacular.  The way the leaves are extra gnarled makes them look unworldly or something you would only see in a microscope or deep in the ocean.

There is still room in our nursery for more plants.  The germination rate was around 96%, but for some reason, this last round, it dropped to 75%.  Perhaps we were too aggressive with the bleach cleaning out the jar.  We did unplug the heating mat for a couple of days.  It could be the hydrogen peroxide/water mix we used.  It might be that toilet paper has some sort of properties that inhibits germination…

The plants that have sprouted are indeed doing great.  The super hot wing is nearly at capacity with Reapers, Ghosts, and Scorpions,  36 cells of each.

If you notice the plants with the curled leaves; that’s only happening to the Lemon Drops.  Must be the phenotype.

When combining cells, we discovered the established plants had massive rootballs.  We attribute that to Lucky Dog K-9 Cube from Fox Farm and our Mineral Meal Mix.

This year, our Mineral Meal Mix started out heavy on the banana peels, eggshells, and Epsom salts.   That means there was a good amount of potassium and magnesium in the compost tea we made with it. to spray the seedlings with.
